One of the things I love about this show is that while it is a police procedural, the cases often take a backseat to the deep character development that takes place on the show. In An Unnatural Arrangement Gregson got some attention and we’ve learned so much more about this character who we normally see only in terms of his interactions with Sherlock and Joan.
We got to see Sherlock learning what a partnership means. Partnership doesn’t mean that if the case is solved at the end of the day everyone wins. Joan wants to learn and grow and be part of his team. The procedure and how they get there is just as important as the end result.
I love how much agency and empowerment they give Joan. She stands up for herself in the face of her partner who is admittedly more experienced and skilled than she is. But she isn’t afraid to say that she is also talented and has a lot of potential. And when he hands over a trunk of cases even he couldn’t solve, not only does that show his confidence in her but also her confidence in herself. She believes she can make a difference in a cold case Sherlock has given up on and deemed unsolvable.
UGH I LOVE THIS SHOW.
